Supportive Mothers and Delusions

After the first day in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter I got back to the hotel and spent several hours writing letters to a bunch of people. After I wrote the letters, I sealed the back with wax and pressed my house crest into it. I sent them by owl later on in the trip.

While with most people I simply told them random bits about Harry Potter World, the conversation with Mom was very different.

We have a lot of these sort of (hypothetical) conversations - about anything and everything.

Here's a glimpse into our relationship.

My owl to Mom:

Mother,
I write you with ink-stained and aching fingers. The Three Broomsticks offered a hearty and filling feast - I was unable to eat until 10 hours later. A refreshing mug of butterbeer chased the heat from my body and Ollivanders was a chilling experience - this is meant positively, of course. Classes begin soon and I hope this owl reaches you before I am overcome with deadlines, textbooks and experiments gone horribly wrong. Do you notice I'm stalling? Hopefully your Gryffindor bravery will not fail you know. As you may have feared I've been sorted to Slytherin. Ramona - as expected - has gone to the pansies - I mean, Hufflepuffs. I asked a Gryffindork the time and they could only show me their watch, they couldn't read the arms. The language barrier has nothing to do with it. I've had one too many cauldron cakes and I fear my dreams will be of the Horntail and dementors.

As I feared my letter came AFTER I returned home and started school, it arrived last Thursday, while I was in class. She responded immediately via Facebook:

An owl just landed for me!!! I suspected you would be sorted to Slytherin, perhaps you will be able to facilitate an end to the animosity between the houses. Speaking so derogatory of members of the other houses...Gryffindork and pansies....is not the greatest of starts. Sigh......I am sorry I am responding via Muggle technology but the owl  ate a bad mouse and is quite ill. See you at break my little snake. Study hard.

I know family is supposed to be supportive. But it's no wonder I have voices in my head and issues dealing with reality - what with her supporting all of my delusions so flawlessly.

Do you have relationships in your life where you have this sort of fun? Have you told your family you love them lately (cause you should!)? Anyone as silly as I am?

  1. That is just awesome! Sounds like you and your mom have a great relationship! And yes, I do have people in my life that are as silly as me. My parents and my sister and just crazy and we have so much fun when we get together. Even doing dumb stuff. I know that craziness has rubbed off in my writing. Thanks for sharing your letter!

  2. oh yes! i'm always playing pretend with my little boys. they each have their own super powers and work on advancing their abilities every day... just not the best idea to tell the little one's their super power could possibly be flying... they actually try to do it... so much blood...
    anyway, your mama rocks!

  5. Do you think your mom would adopt me? My mom is great--very supportive. But she told me the other day that she can't read anything with any kind of paranormal to it-no witches, wizzards, warlocks, werewolves, vampires, ghosts, faeries, etc. because she can't suspend her belief that far. I'm pretty sure my and her literary tastes will never meet. :)

  6. Aww, your mom sounds so cute! No wonder you have such a great imagination :) I love that she knows so much about Harry Potter--I really need to make my mom read the books!

  7. This is so sweet. It's cool that your mom is so supportive of your Slytherin connections. I'm Ravenclaw and my husband is Hufflepuff and it causes a lot of tension around the house. On the plus side, Hubby is very hard-working and loyal :)

  8. Did you ever think that you feed my delusions? Just so you know the response i did required no thought at all. Life is so much easier when tempered with fun and healthy craziness.
leigh- there is a line up to be adopted into the family, bribes are considered. :)

  9. I love your mom! What a great response! I have a very close relationship with my mom, but she's not that witty. She's more of the smothering, feed you, love on you, listen to all of your problems ad nauseum type. We talk way more than we should every day. And we say "love you" before we hang up the phone.

My dad, stepmom and one of my older brothers have a more playful relationship. There is a Happy Bunny sticker that has been circulating for about a decade now. When I was up for a visit, I found it in my book! So I took it and hid it in the silverware drawer. My stepmom took it and snuck it in my dad's jacket pocket. It disappeared shortly before I left and I unpacked with dread when I got home, fully expecting it to be there. Luckily, it wasn't. We do silly stuff all the time.

  11. LOL! both your letters were great.

My mother is my closest family relationship. We go shopping, pass books to one another, laugh about everything, make fun of everything, randomly dance in stores, restaurants, etc. and just enjoy being friends with each other.

Awesome post. *goes to call mom...*

  12. sooo, I realize I have been a horrible friend not commenting on any of your posts. For that I am very sorry. I have read all of them I promise. I looove the letter to your mom and her response. I would like to defend the Hufflepuffs - we are not pansies, someone has to be the nice ones. This way you can tell them apart from the mean (er I mean power hungry). Also I think your mom has a bit of crazy in her as well. heh heh!

  13. I love your mom's response. It's great.

I'm starting to get jealous though. I so want to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

  14. My Dad has this obsession with me writing an alien abduction scene into all of my novels, no matter the genre.

Along with mailing a new insurance certificate for my car, he included a note that he "found" outside of the posting office reading: "Been abducted by aliens. Help!" And then my Dad wrote a note saying: "See? It does happen! Love, Dad"

  15. This was wonderful. I don't have any close family members who have thoroughly read Harry Potter like that. Maybe I could have an exchange like that with my children now. But I'm afraid if I did, I'd start believing what I wrote!

  16. No… and yes, I tell my family every day and sometimes twice a day that I love them and how wonderful they are and so on… and no to the last question.
    Thx.

  17. I love those notes! And yay for silliness! This would be something I could write too :D

Also, I tell my family I love them every time I see them, normally :)

  18. oh my goodness, this is hilarious, "speaking so derogatory of members of the other houses..Gryffindork and pansies is not a good start" haha, your mom is super fab! hmm, my best friend and I used to walk around campus and I would speak to her in spanish and she'd respond back in Arabic speakin animatedly with hands and arms swinging all over the place, neither of us having a clue what the other was saying, as we strolled amongst the populace. It was our own fun, but it made us laugh. My husband handles my quirkiness with a charming spirit too! :) oh thanks for stopping by the blog! you know...I kept the dumb book, and figured one day...someday I MIGHT go back to it...but who knows, it still annoys me, I've moved on to Dean Koontz for now. :)
