In a creative mood but unwilling to start the paintings for my sister's Christmas present, I went to the craft store. There, I varied between wanting to design T-Shirts, make jewelry and decorate cakes.
When I got back home, I hung out with my friend Ramona and, bored, I decided to do her makeup. I wanted to be a makeup artist and do this: (Makeup inspired by the Cheshire Cat)
And this: (Strawberry and leaves)
Everyday.
This is everything I wanted to be - today.
Sometimes, I want to be everything.
And you know what? That's what I love about storytelling and writing, it can take me places and live lives I never could have on my own. I can be anything my imagination conjures. If it doesn't work out, I can set that life aside for a rainy day and move on to the next.
No strings. No years of schooling. Nothing to hold me back except the limitations I set upon myself.
Now that, my friends, is freedom.
What's one thing you love about writing? Your passion? Ever have any wild dreams besides being a writer/whatever you are now?
LOL I have tons of things I'd want to do! Fly a helicopter, be a private investigator or a CIA agent. *grin*
ReplyDeleteVery cool with the makeup!!!
Love the make-up! You summed up the freedom of writing beautifully. I love being able to create a reality based on my whims and what makes its way into my head. Great post!
ReplyDeleteExactly why I love writing!
ReplyDeleteAmazing make up, I love it!! I wish you would be here on Saturday, you could help me do my make up and then we could go to the Halloween Party!!!
ReplyDeleteDid you see a blog buddy of mine Hannah is having a pre-releasefor Harry Potter party?! I'm so jealous I can't go! I mean dressing up and all! It's going to rock!
I love writing because I could never decide what I wanted to do, so I began to write and was allowed to be who I wanted, go where I wanted, and no one said anything. Having an imagination is the best gift I could have been given!
Haha - I love this post!
ReplyDeleteI have never carved a pumpkin! I know! We just don;t do that over here...
Love the make-up - I love the idea of the strawberry one.
And me? I was always changing my mind about what I wanted to be. I was into acting for a very long time - and thought of going to drama school but somehow ended up being a teacher (?) I also thought being an artist would be cool, but I am too lazy :)
x
this is exactly why i like writing... that and research. it gives me an excellent excuse to bury myself and all my time into research! plus words are pretty and stories are fun! :)
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome!!!! I've done everything else in the world (okay it feels that way) and NOW I am living my passion (of writing). Feels sooooo good!
ReplyDeletegreat job! And I totally get you with wanting to be/do everything. When I was young I wanted to be a rock guitarist, a roller blade/skateboarding champion, a wiccan priestess, a boarding school prep, and a marine biologist. When i went to college, I changed my major four times. Writing is the only thing I feel like I could do everyday for the rest of my life:)
ReplyDeleteSo cool! I love that strawberry :) My passion has always been writing (when I was four, I wanted to be a princess, but since then the answer has been writer), and I've got my fingers crossed it works out!
ReplyDeleteI love that there are no limits in writing, just your own imagination. And the idea of getting that image/story from inside your head, into someone else’s, is amazing. But, if I could be absolutely anything, I’d be a millionaire :)

I love makeup! In high school, that was "my thing". In my book, I made my character a makeup artist. Just like you were referring to, the wonderful thing about writing is that you can make someone be whatever you want them (or yourself) to be.
ReplyDeleteI want to be everything, too!
ReplyDeleteI really wanted to be an Olympic gymnast, an actress... and various other occupations!
I always wanted to be a makeup artist too! It's too fun. And I think writers have that "want to be everything" gene.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes. This is what drew me to writing and acting; I can kind-of be everything, eventually.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to be a writer - first an author, then a poet, then a screenwriter, then a tv writer, now an author again. Writing in some capacity has driven me since I was four years old! I love stories - I love telling them, weaving them, reading them! Like you, I love it because you can be ANYTHING (and everything). You become your characters. GREAT post! And Ramona's make-up looks amazing. Kudos to her for being a willing subject.
ReplyDeleteLove the makeup! You are right- storytelling is so much fun, and I can't imagine not doing it (even if I never get published!). I also used to draw all the time. I had notebooks filled with drawings- mostly people. I think that's the artistic part of us- we are all artists and I think that helps us in our writing.
ReplyDeleteHmm, professional traveler maybe? Food critic?
ReplyDeleteI guess writing is the one thing I really aspire to these days. But you look like you could easily have another career as a makeup artist. Those picts are awesome!
whos the model? hot stuff heh heh! I hope you are feeling less depressed about all creative things you could not do yesterday.
ReplyDeletewow is there anything you can't do haha.
ReplyDeleteand my the way, you should totally subscribe to Psych todaty best ,agazine ever that and Scientific american mind!!
WOW! I love this empowering post!! So true ... that's exactly what writing does.
ReplyDeleteI feel that way when I dance too... total freedom of expression! I can interpret the music into any movement I want.
So glad I read this today!
This is exactly what I love about writing - the freedom, the possibilities! Also, I love trying out make-up things. One of the best things about Halloween. :D
ReplyDeleteAlso, I totally wanted to be a singer and a ballerina when I was younger. Too bad I have stage fright and I'm not that coordinated. Haha.
Love the strawberry and leaves. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I hate limiting myself, too. That must be why I'm a writer!
Hello Melissa,
ReplyDeleteIt's me, your Canadian friend living in England.
Writing, for me, is a cathartic and therapeutic positive resource. Through the power and the magic of words, my spirit is free and the 'inner child' takes me to wondrous places.
Have a peaceful and positive day.
With respect and kindness, Gary :-)
I like writing for the same reasons you do. That I can pick words and carefully place them to form stories, it's absolutely magical. I don't think I could ever stop writing!
ReplyDeleteI love the makeup - very creative!
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, I've had those days. I wanted to WRITe when I was younger, but I didn't think so far as to want to be an actual WRITer and nothing else until two years ago.
I love your explanation - it hit the nail right on the head. That's what I love about writing too. I love how it lets me escape, and these days, I've been wanting to do that a lot.
Awesome makeup!
ReplyDeleteI always love the IDEA of carving pumpkins, but then when I get my hands into the goop... ick! Glad you had fun, though!
I LOVE the strawberry and leaves - amazing!
ReplyDeleteOne thing I love about writing? The spontaneity.
That's some amazing talent! I love creating characters that feel real to me and worlds that I want to walk in, it's just so freaking awesome! :D
ReplyDeleteI love your imagination. When I was a child I used to dream I was a kite. Always trying to fly away, but my family would never let go of the string. What does that represent I wonder.

Bwa haha! I am follower 200! Woot! I followed you from your comment over at thmafi's blog and laughed at your profile so much and your dragon dream that I knew I HAD to officially stalk you. I want to be a teacher of writing, which is what I am in school for and I get to do it too since I'm a TA so my life is crazy but what I love which makes me say YEAH!
ReplyDeleteAnd to show that I too am insane I shall share with you my craziest dream in which I was on vacation with my family and was very angry because they were making me keep a baby yak in my room and it kept eating my blankets. Bad yak. It was a really crummy vacation and no one could understand why I was so upset.
Ahem. If I have not weirded you out too much then maybe we could be NaNo buddies!
The make-up is awesome, and I think her Superman tee is really cool.
