Book Wars 2

The event were, despite the negative connotation of war, there is absolutely no bloodshed! (Or spilled ink - since we are dealing with books here)

This week I read:
(Click on the book titles to be redirected to their Goodreads page)

I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore
First book in the Lorien Legacies

With I Am Number Four, my favorite thing has to be the story itself. There really isn't any other way to explain my feelings about this book except the story was...out of this world (And yeah, I know this pun is totally lame because the book has something to do with Aliens - as an aside: I'm not a big fan of aliens but this book  may have changed my mind....)

VS.

Once A Witch by Carolyn MacCullough

The best thing about this book is the emphasis on family dynamics. Too often in books, this sort of atmosphere is left by the wayside - which after reading this book, I'm reminded of how silly that is. With a large family you have all the stuff that makes for interesting plot: love, drama, comedy, rivalry, competition, support.

This Week's Winner

This week my favorite book would have to be I Am Number Four. This book convinced me that alien-centric books really aren't lame and considering how anti I was before, that's saying something. At first I thought it would be very Smallville (TV show based on Superman before he was Superman) but it really came into it's own. It's well paced and sets up the beginning of a series perfectly. I was gripped from the first chapter and had no choice but to read straight through to the end.

Have you read either of these books? What did you think? What's your favorite read this week?

  1. I haven't read those. I saw a recommendation for Once a Witch somewhere else and I've been meaning to look into it. I Am Number Four is new to me, but it sounds interesting. Thanks for the recommendation.

In the past week, I read Enemy Lover by Karin Harlow and Frostfire by Lynn Viehl. I loved both of them in their own way, so for me, it's a tie. =o)

  3. I've not read any of those books, but I'm certainly intrigued by number four.

On a separate note, have you considered signing up for the Speculative Reading Challenge? Here's the link

  5. haven't read either. Although after reading the description of "Once a Witch" I had this thought: "They're really vanilla-ing out the paranormal these days" --yes? ;p

  6. Never read either book.
I did read about the press that published I Am Number Four though. Pays kids $500 to crank out best selling young adult books. And that's not the author's real name.

  7. Both are in my list but wasn't too sure on when I would get to them. Sound pretty good though!

  9. Is this the same Four as the movie?!!! I can't wait to see it and if this book is where it came from, it's definitely going on my tbr list.

The Once a Witch sounds really good too. My tbr list can reach to the end of our road by now :P

    Thanks for posting these!

  11. I bought I Am Number Four and intended to read it before I found out that it was written by James Frey - the same guy scamming authors out of their publishing rights. So, yeah, not going to read it anytime soon.

  12. I haven't read either of these, but they both look awesome! Can't wait for the I Am Number 4 movie :)

  13. I've read I Am Number Four but I didn't really like it. The dialogue and some of the prose just seemed awkward to me, and I didn't like the magic part of it. Aliens and magic just don't mix for me. :P

  14. I have I Am Number Four on my TBR list. It's waiting on my end table for me to crack it open. At the moment, I'm stuck in The Maze!

  15. I haven't read either but I have to say I'm a sucker for dust jackets and that 'Once a Witch' is calling to me. ;)

Thanks for sharing with us! And I have something for you on my blog, please do by when you can. ;)

  16. I haven't read either... but I'm seeing that first one everywhere and I'm dying to read it! I just started The Hunger Games this week, and I'm tackling all 3 in a row, so I'll be busy with those for a little while.

  17. Geeze girl, how are you reading 2 books a week? Hm, they both look good. I'll have to say the first one looks good. I like a good sci fi every once in a while.

  18. OMG! I am number four is the brainchild of James Frey. And it's good? Man. I was hoping it would suck, considering he hired a stable of writers to do all the work. I wonder who the real credit should go to.

  19. I read I Am Number Four when it was released, and I really enjoyed it. Like you, I was sucked in immediately and had to read it straight through. Glad you enjoyed it!

  20. Thanks for the reviews, they both sound very fun. I love this new book wars idea. :)

My favorite read this week was Mogworld by Yahtzee Croshaw. I put up a mini-review if you are interested at my blog.

  21. I would probably read both books just based on their covers- so pretty. I am a sucker for beautiful book covers. I am so happy when some of the books I pick actually end up being amazing. For instance, I was completely intrigued by the book cover for "Pink Noise: A Posthuman Tale" by Leonid Korogodski, but was even more impressed when I read the book- pretty exciting read! Love it when that happens!
